Our spies out in the US have caught the ‘new compact sedan’, aka the new 2010 VW Jetta, out on test in the sizzling heat of the American desert.
The new 2010 Jetta is the latest take on the VW Golf MK6 architecture, so expect an array of new engines and gizmos to give the slow-burning Jetta a lift. Insiders claim the jump from Golf Mk5 to current Jetta was much smaller than from the latest Golf Mk6 to next-gen Jetta.
I don’t see many VW Jettas on the road…
That’s because this is one Volkswagen that’s aimed very much at the US market. VW sold just 4929 Jettas in the UK last year, compared with 69,090 Golfs. Small saloons just don’t light up British motorists’ imaginations, it seems.
Although the model on test here is a US-spec Jetta, the European one will look very similar, bar minor detail and engine spec changes. Expect plenty of sharper-creased Polo/Golf styling influence.
The new VW Jetta goes on sale in spring/summer 2010.
