We’ve only just driven Porsche’s new GT3 – and there are still GT3 RS, Turbo and GT2 variants of the facelifted 911 to come – but Stuttgart is already deep into the development of the next generation of its rear-engined icon. This is spy video of the coupe and cabriolet versions of the new 911 on test at the Nurburgring.
We’ll see the car at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show, and it’ll again share parts with the new Boxster and Cayman (due in 2012). The looks will of course be a subtle evolution, but big changes are expected in the aerodynamics department. The deep front spoiler is visible in our video, and a complex set of aerodynamic aids (including a motorised rear wing, active front air intakes and perforated wheel-houses) are designed to suck the 911 to the road and reduce its famous bobbing front end.
Purists might not like that, and Porsche is also working hard to make sure the new electro-hydraulic steering keeps the feedback of the current system.
The range will kick off with a Carrera S packing a direct-injection 3.4-litre flat-six, and there’ll also be an RS with a 3.8-litre 400bhp engine, a 450bhp GT3, a 525bhp Turbo and a 550bhp GT2, but the 600bhp GT1 has recently been cancelled.
