New Porsche 911 Speedster: chopping the top, 992-style

Updated: 26 April 2023

► Scooped: the new 992 Speedster
► Expect it at 2023 LA show, on sale 2024
Paying tribute to the 356 Speedster

Remember the low, clean, mean-looking 911 Speedster that Porsche created in 2019 to usher the 991 era of 911 to a close? A 992-based limited-edition Speedster in similar vein is expected to go on show at the Los Angeles motor show in late 2023, ahead of 2024 sales.

The ultimate soft-top 911 is going to boast a more steeply raked windscreen than the 911 Cabriolet, lowered bucket seats, more aerodynamic ‘power domes’ behind the seats, extra luggage space in the back and a snugger-fitting fully automatic canvas top.

Our artist’s impression by Andrei Avarvarii above depicts how we expect the slammed and slinky alfresco 911 to look.

Engine specs for new 992 Speedster: turboless flat six!

Porsche is the past master of giving its limited-edition cars some magnetic appeal and word on the street in Zuffenhausen is that the 992 Speedster will be powered by the naturally aspirated flat six from the latest Porsche 911 GT3. That means 4.0 litres of high-revving joy and 503bhp delivered at a stratospheric 8400rpm.

It’s too early to talk performance figures, but GT3 power should bring a 0-62mph sprint comfortably under four seconds and a top speed closing in on 200mph (though this may be capped for reasons of hair protection).

According to those in the know, small cameras perched high up on the fuselage will eliminate those huge rear-three-quarter blind spots for good. At the same time, stealth proximity sensors are likely to protect the vulnerable alloy wheels from kerb rash.
