What powers the new 2011 Merc CLS AMG?
This is a little confusing. Disregard the reports claiming it’ll stick with the 6.2-litre V8 powering the E63 AMG – despite the same name, the new go-faster CLS will in fact premiere AMG’s brand spanking new 5.5-litre V8.
Breathed on by direct injection and twin turbos, AMG’s new lump will go on to power all future big fast Mercs. Despite its drop in capacity, those bi-blowers will ensure a healthy 570bhp for the sort of inane warp speeds and .
When can I buy the new CLS 63 AMG?
Not until mid-2011, we hear. Why not call it the CLS 55 AMG? Because buyers would be put off by the shrunken number and feel shortchanged. So CLS 63 AMG it is, despite the 5.5-litre V8.
The CLS has set a cat among the pigeons in the exec sector. Originally conceived as a ‘Jag fighter’, the CLS has gone to spawn numerous copycat designs: VW’s Passat CC, Audi’s forthcoming A7 and there will be more. Small wonder, as the CLS has sold 40% ahead of its original target.
