► Intel on AMG’s new electric SUV
► Uses new AMG.EA platform
► Due in 2027 after electric AMG four-door
Affalterbach is electrifying, with this upcoming new model set to become its second proper series-production electric car on its all-new AMG.EA platform.
Mercedes-AMG has released a single image of a prototype model, as the new EV goes through its punishing testing procedure ahead of launch. This electric SUV will launch after the electric four-door model which is due to be revealed towards the end of 2025.
Details of how it’ll look are scant for now, aside from a silhouette sketch that shows a shallow glasshouse and sporty roofline. The SUV itself looks to be a similar size to a GLE.
But it’s what’s under the skin that counts: that new AMG.EA platform. This is a ground-up architecture for Affalterbach’s future electric cars, underpinning a series of high-performance EVs over the next few years. ‘We have a great new platform, a very authentic performance one. It’s equipped with possibly the most advanced electric motors on the market, really setting benchmarks,’ Mercedes chief technology officer Markus Schäfer tells CAR. ‘The battery is extraordinary, too – the pack will support an authentic AMG sports car.’
The SUV is codenamed X591, according to CAR sources, and uses technologically-advanced axial flux motors from Mercedes’ wholly-owned subsidiary, Yasa. Our intel suggests that these motors are good for 479bhp and 590lb ft each, and can be deployed as a twin-motor or even three-motor setup. CAR’s intel also points to a 100kWh battery pack with an 800-volt electronic architecture, allowing for long range potential and fast charging.
AMG’s all-electric four-door is expected to be revealed towards the end of 2025 and launch in 2026. This AMG electric SUV will follow, launching in 2027.
