The plug-in Puma: 2024’s Ford Puma EV spied on manoeuvres

Updated: 16 July 2024

► New 2024 Ford Puma EV spied
► Fresh spyshots of £33k electric Puma
► 55kWh battery, 100kW charging

The Blue Oval’s bestselling car in Europe is about to be electrified – and the new Ford Puma Gen-E will make its debut in November 2024 ahead of UK sales in the first quarter of 2025, as it bids to become one of the best electric SUVs

Our new spyshots reveal a late prototype vehicle undergoing shakedown tests in the Austrian Alps ahead of its launch, when it will challenge the likes of the Peugeot e-2008 and Volvo EX30.

Ford Puma Gen-E expected in late 2024

Engineers are fine-tuning the powertrain of Ford’s cheapest EV which is related to that underpinning the Ford Transit Courier as the two share the same shared B2E platform architecture – a platform optimised for car use and then deployed by the Blue Oval’s commercial vehicle (CV) team.

That means we can expect a battery capacity of around 55kWh, a 100kW (134bhp) electric motor driving the front wheels and competitive 100kW rapid charging ability. Final specs will be confirmed this autumn.

Sounds good. What’s the likely electric range of the Ford Puma Gen-E?

Based on these figures and insider info, CAR expects a range of around 230 miles on the standardised WLTP cycle. Let’s call it 170-190 miles in everyday real-world conditions (we can’t think of a single EV that matches its official claim).

It's the Ford Puma, made electric

We’ll know for sure when the electric Ford Puma is unveiled towards the end of the year. The Blue Oval quotes a 10-80% top-up time of 35 minutes for the E-Tourneo Courier, meaning that 10 minutes’ charging could add around 54 miles of range.

Performance should be quite sprightly, despite the extra bulk of that generously sized battery pack: that 100kW electric motor is good for around 214lb ft of torque, for brisk acceleration – but don’t go expecting Ford Puma ST levels of performance.

Why is Ford disguising the electric Puma?

Good question. The camouflage is unusual for a model which already exists, making us believe the regular Puma range may be due a mid-life facelift soon. The Ford Puma range was only mildly fettled for the 2024 model year, so a deeper upgrade is a possibility.

Our spies caught the new electric Ford Puma on test in Austria

This disguised prototype suggests that the Puma EV will have styling tailored to match its powertrain needs: a blanked-off grille, redesigned bumper and front valance, aero-smooth wheels as well as a tidied-up rear end, owing to the lack of an exhaust pipe are all expected.

Another detail to look out for: will the 80-litre MegaBox well in the boot survive the addition of a large battery under the floor? We hear it will – and in fact is likely to be reformatted to become even more flexible on the EV… Consider our interest piqued.

The new Ford Puma Gen-E will be unveiled in November, at which time specs, prices and full details will be confirmed and order books opened; expect the first UK deliveries in time for the 25-reg in March 2025, priced from around £33,000 in line with the competition, as part of a greatly expanded range of Ford electric cars

Ford Puma Gen-E (far left) already been teased by the Blue Oval

Ford has already teased its new Puma Gen-E – it’s the small EV far left in the line-up above, alongside the Mustang Mach-E, Explorer, Capri and five electric vans.

Back in February 2024, it said: ‘Ford has announced that the fully electric Puma Gen-E will be revealed later this year – the first Puma to deliver zero-tailpipe emission driving.’
