Ford is revving up its newest-generation Mustang one notch higher than the GT350 across the pond, and CAR’s photographers have caught it out testing in Detroit.

Yes, it’s another car in a bag! But a car in a bag that looks very much like a Mustang and could be the new GT500, we hear. As you can see from the pictures – there are a couple of salient details we can pick out to back up our theory.

What makes you think this is the 2018 Ford Mustang GT500?

The wheels are completely covered (the last time Ford did that, they had hidden carbon ceramic discs underneath) and are wrapped around absolutely enormous 305mm-wide tyres on the front – 10mm wider than the GT350. There’s also the complete lack of rear wing and what looks like a chunky front splitter.

Little is known about the engine or performance specs but we could see an even more powerful version of the 5.2-litre ‘Voodoo’ V8, according to US reports. Supercharging might be the way forward to help boost power, but that’s unconfirmed.

Add all of that up and you could have a car that would go head-to-head with the recently revealed and frankly ludicrous 840bhp Dodge Challenger SRT Demon or, at the very least, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

It’s not something we’ll see hit UK roads any time soon, unfortunately, but those across the Pond could have yet another sweet muscle car to sink their teeth into.
