Ford is revitalising the Capri name for a new electric car, and these are our first glimpses of how it looks. Interestingly, Ford has decided to send out teasers of its new Capri via a rather hard-to-find ad campaign, spotted by CAR in our sibling title, Classic Car Weekly.

The small square ad is dripping with clues. The ad promotes what looks to be a business called ‘Comeback Cars’, advertising the fact it’s been going since 1969. ‘We bring back icons to their legendary status, rewired for a new era,’ says the ad. ‘With 55 years of knowledge, our team has restored 1,986 classic coupes. We promise to return your car fast, back from its original glory EV-ERY time.’ The artwork of the ad includes an oval shape around the ‘Comeback Cars’ branding, and what looks to be a silhouette of a sporty coupe.

On top of that, there’s a prompt to message the word ‘COMEBACK’ to a UK phone number via WhatsApp. After having an automated conversation with the phone number, a close-up image of the Capri is sent to you, finishing the conversation by saying ‘the legend returns on July 10th.’

That legend is the Capri, which has long been mooted to return to Ford’s line-up as it expands its range of EVs.

What do we know about the new Ford Capri?

It’s Ford’s latest new car, launching in July 2024. It follows on from the long-delayed Explorer, and will be one of quite a few new EVs from the brand as it electrifies its European line-up. After the Capri will be a Puma EV slated to launch towards the end of 2024, as well as a new electric car to replace the Focus in 2025.

Spy photographers have snapped images of the new Capri out testing in camouflage and – prepare to be disappointed – it’s not a low-slung coupe like the original three generations that were on sale from 1969 until 1986. Instead, it’s a sort of lifted crossover with a sloping roofline – something akin to a Polestar 2 in terms of shape and size. The Capri, then, will rival that alongside cars like the Tesla Model 3, BYD Seal and Hyundai Ioniq 6.

What range and power will the new Ford Capri offer?

This is where Ford’s partnership with Volkswagen comes good once again. Similar to the Explorer, the Capri will almost certainly use VW’s MEB architecture – albeit with a bit of a Ford twist to it – and could use the updated MEB+ variant. MEB+ offers up to 435 miles of electric range and offers single-motor or dual-motor all-wheel drive power configurations, as well as charging speeds of up to 200kW.

When will the new Ford Capri electric car go on sale?

It has to have its official reveal, first. The new Capri will make its official launch on 10 July 2024, with sales likely starting towards the end of 2024.
