BMW M1 (2011) or a 1-series by M Division

Updated: 26 January 2015

BMW is testing a new M-fettled version of the 1-series Coupé in readiness for a 2011 launch. The two-door 1-series will slot above the 135i and is rumoured to pack the 3.0-litre straight six from the 535i.

Our photographers shot the car – which could yet revive the M1 badge, although there are factions who prefer a simpler M suffix – as it lapped the Nurburgring in Germany.

So what’s new on the M-division’s 2011 1-series?

Equipped with twin turbos, power could spiral to 350bhp or more, according to Munich sources.

A bodykit is clearly visible underneath the lightest of swirly whirly disguise: engorged air intakes at the front to channel oxygen to blown engine and brakes, flared wheelarches and a very large set of rims.

Surely they can’t call this the M1, can they?

If the marketing bods win the day and the M1 badge is used, it’ll mark the first time the hallowed name has been revived since the 1970s supercar.

The M1 Hommage concept car was shown in summer 2008 and although at the time there was a will to produce it, the global recession quickly put paid to that.
