I continue to be amazed by people’s reaction to the Volkswagen ID. Buzz. It turns more heads than my last yellow long-term test car, the look-at-me Lamborghini Huracan. To test this wasn’t just a Northamptonshire thing, I took the Buzz on a road trip to Bradford, a round trip of nearly 240 miles.
With temperatures plunging to 3oC, I wasn’t expecting to manage the journey on one charge. Despite the 255-mile WLTP range, I’ve never exceeded 200 before stopping to plug in. That didn’t change today, when we consumed 2.2 miles per kWh at an average speed of 61mph, but it was generally very good on the motorway.
It’s comfy at a cruise, the ride quality and hush impressive for a bluff MPV, and the adjustable armrests on the front seats really make a difference to comfort.
I chanced upon a bank of Instavolt chargers next to a Greggs lunch stop (sorry) and replenished 56kWh of energy before my appointment. At a toppy 85p a kilowatt, that’s nearly £48 one way. Compare that to £16 for charging up off- peak at home upon my return.
Oh, and the no-nonsense Yorkshire folk in Bradford loved the Buzz just as much as soft southerners.
