► This month: tributes to the greats

Three new chronographs this month, taking inspiration from very different sources, and each with a very different look: one restrained, monochrome and modernist; one retro with a modern twist; and one more brash and youthful, even if its inspiration looks back 30 years.

Breitling Super AVI Mosquito
RRP £8,000 | Available at Goldsmiths

The latest Breitling chronograph to take a classic design and give it a modern twist is the new Super AVI range, based on the classic aviator’s chrono of 1953. There are four editions, each celebrating a notable warplane. The de Havilland Mosquito (pictured above) is the only Brit, and the best-looking watch of the bunch.

Now here’s a watch-car collaboration we didn’t see coming: Swiss watch maker IWC and American toy car maker Hot Wheels. This 50-off limited edition involves a titanium-cased chronograph with a chequered-flag dial and a 1:64-scale Mercedes 300SL hand-made in Hot Wheels’ prototype workshop.

TAG Heuer Formula 1 Senna Special Edition
£1,900 | Available at Jura Watches

watches feb 22 senna

TAG has just released this special edition of its Formula 1 chronograph to mark the 30th anniversary of Ayrton Senna becoming the youngest driver to win three F1 titles. As well as the obvious ‘Senna’ inscriptions, there’s a subtle pattern on the leather strap, echoing the steel bracelet of the TAG Senna wore.
