Where should CAR go next? We know most of the roads round Europe like the back of our hands, we’ve crossed the Pond at least a dozen times this year and Africa is almost old hat now. Heading east is always interesting, but we’ve already driven to Australia from London (thanks Gavin), taken a Bentley to the Arctic and stared into the robotic soldiers policing the North Korean border from the safety of our Mini.
That’s the problem with adventure. You always want to go the extra mile – somewhere more extreme, somewhere even more ludicrous. The pioneer instinct is alive and well on Planet CAR. It’s like skiing off-piste: the allure of laying fresh tracks is an addictive pastime.
But the world is shrinking, with better roads, detailed maps a click away and easier border controls than at any time in our 46-year history. And as more flags are raised in obscure corners of the planet, we’re running out of new destinations.
Does that matter? Need we seek out new and unexplored routes for our adventures? Should CAR even be driving around the world at all in the dwindling twilight of the oil economy?
