How to run a Ford Transit Connect on sunshine

Updated: 26 January 2015

The new January 2012 issue of CAR Magazine has a free 32-page Green CAR supplment with it – and in it we chronicle how one Lincolnshire village runs a Ford Transit Connect on… sunshine.

Long Sutton has what is claimed to be the greenest community in England. They reckon they create enough electricity from solar power to charge up and run an electric Ford Transit Connect for 5000 miles a year.

That’s one whole charge per week for free.

It’s the brainchild of local eco architect Jerry Harrall, who’s overseen Unity Gardens, an eco settlement of 16 residents living in three 78sq m two-bedroom and 85sq m three-bedroom bungalows.

As well as generating solar power, the buildings require zero heating and have only natural ventilation.

Check out the video below to see how local residents are getting on.
