After a lost decade post-millennium, Peugeot is now on a roll. Following the striking 3008 and 5008 SUVs with their digital i-Cockpits and the stepchange 508 Fastback, it’s now making waves in the small car segment with the latest 208 supermini and 2008 SUV.

Peugeot was first to get two model lines to market with a simple choice of petrol, diesel or pure electric engines, plus lots of driver assistance and digital features.

Journey started with the electric 208 in Cornwall

Which got us thinking: it’s almost 100 years since the Motor Cycling Club first staged the End-to-End, a time trial inviting cars to drive between Land’s End to John O’Groats. How about we revisit this quintessential British road trip, in populist cars that democratise cutting-edge technologies to lower emissions, help with driving and pamper occupants?

And, being Car magazine, pit the three 208s with three different engines against the clock at Knockhill circuit. What’s fastest: petrol, diesel or electric?

The Unboring Road Trip

So, before the spring 2020 lockdown, we teamed up with Peugeot to drive between the UK’s extremities in a relay of electric, diesel and petrol 208s, before switching to the more rugged 2008 SUV for the final leg across tough, snowy highlands terrain.

• Electric 208: 300-mile odyssey battling winter storms, from Land’s End to Birmingham
• Diesel 208: from Birmingham to the Lake District, via the spectacular peaks
• Petrol 208: from the Lakes to Edinburgh – is it closest to a hot hatch?
• 2008 SUV: the final leg, from Edinburgh to John O’Groats

Diesel 208 frugal and agile

Three 208s go head-to-head at Knockhill

One of the highlights was getting the three 208s onto Knockhill circuit, for a time trial. Which would come out on top? The 127bhp threepot petrol, the closest thing to a traditional warm hatch; the torquier diesel, which also happens to be the lightest car and the only one with a six-speed manual; or the 134bhp pure EV, which has the impediment of 365kg more weight.
