A life-size Lego recreation of the McLaren MP4/4 Formula One car, made famous by three-time world champion Ayrton Senna, will be on display at Lego’s flagship Leicester Square store in central London from Friday, July 26th to Saturday, July 27th, 2024.

The car is a life-size replica of Senna’s 1988 car, which took the Brazilian to his first driver’s championship, battling against his teammate, Alain Prost. After a fierce clash at the Japanese Grand Prix, Senna won the championship by just three points.

It took 400,000 Lego pieces and 700 hours to build the life-size replica, complete with Senna’s iconic helmet. Even more amazingly, it’s slightly heavier than the real 1988 car, weighing over 600kg compared to the real car’s feather-like 540kg.

The life-size Lego McLaren will be taken to Leicester Square to promote Lego’s Make & Take event. Fans can create and take home their own miniature version of the brand’s Speed Champions McLaren Formula One car. The event takes place at Leicester Square between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on both days.

Ayrton Senna is a driver who needs no introduction. The impact to F1, from his spectacular driving talent to his sheer ruthlessness on track, caught the minds and imaginations of many, both in and out of the paddock. CAR’s own Russell Bulgin sat down and met him in 1990, and you can read the full original interview here.
