► New ride-on McLaren P1 toy
► Electric drive, costs £375
► The first open-top P1 supercar!
McLaren has relented and built an open-top P1 supercar – but only for selected lucky toddlers and big kids.
The new toy car is in line with McLaren Automotive’s business plan: it’s a pure electric vehicle, although top speed is somewhat slower than its road car siblings. It’s limited to 3mph to meet Europe’s stringent playground safety rules.
Sounds electrifying… When can I buy a Ride On McLaren P1?
This officially licensed car is available at McLaren dealerships from October 2016, for the princely sum of £375. Car finance is, sadly, not available to spread the cost for cash-strapped youngsters hoping to take out a PCP on this new McLaren.
Selected toy shops will also stock the Volcano Yellow P1, which is designed for children from the ages of three to six years old (although CAR has already lodged a request for a test drive).
How fast is the electric McLaren?
McLaren quotes a 0-3mph time of just two seconds, with a seamless surge of e-torque delivered through a three-speed forward transmission – and reverse gear. Even better, the brand’s dihedral door design is retained, as is the F1’s memorably central driving position for clipping apices (and teachers’ heels).
We can feel a new Little Tikes group toy test coming on…
