► Porsche 908, only raced once…
► On its original, repaired chassis
► Under the hammer in August 2018
Classic car auctions are always full of rare and unusual finds, but this Porsche 908 might be one of the best. Consigned to RM Sotheby’s flagship Monterey auction later this year, the ex-works Porsche 908 ‘Short-Tail’ is an incredible piece of machinery.
Only the tenth 908 to be built by Porsche, chassis 9008-010 took part in the 1968 Spa 1000km and was piloted by leading Porsche drivers drivers Vic Elford and Jochen Neerpasch.
However, tricky race conditions meant the 908 eventually crashed out and was nearly destroyed – and that marked the beginning and end of its racing career.
After being sold and tucked away in Swiss storage until the 1990s, this 908 was soon bought again, and taken to the US to be restored.
Now 908-010 is up for sale for a cool $2.3-2.8 million, and comes with a pristine flat-eight engine, along with its original, now repaired chassis. If you can afford to buy it, you’ll need to check out RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale on 24-25 August 2018.
