► Wind Tunnel Efficiency Center
Volkswagen has opened its new advanced wind tunnel to help shape its cars of tomorrow.
Aerodynamic modelling is more important than ever, as manufacturers work to make their cars more streamlined – saving fuel and cutting emissions as well as wind noise.
Genuine efficiency is king, especially in the wake of the Dieselgate emissions scandal, and the tougher new Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedures (WLTP) economy regime being phased in.
VW wind tunnel in numbers
The new facility in Wolfsburg will be used to hone the aerodynamics and drag figures for all Volkswagen Group products, from cars to motorbikes, vans and lorries. Here are some eye-popping stats about it:
- Wind speeds simulated up to 155mph
- Temperature range from -30C to +60C
- Exceptionally quiet – tunnel makes only 65db when running a 100mph wind
- One aerodynamic drag value can be determined in 20 minutes
- Total floor area: 8800sq m
