Jaguar is showing off its vision for how the steering wheel could evolve in future: dubbed Sayer, it’s a ‘concept wheel’ designed to showcase how humans will increasingly interact with their cars in this digital age.

It’ll be deployed on the as-yet-unseen Jaguar Future-Type concept car, a show vehicle ‘exploring mobility in 2040 and beyond.’ It’s a removable wheel that’ll fit on any Jaguar vehicle in future.

Sayer: what’s different about Jaguar’s future steering wheel

Like a Caterham’s wheel, you’ll detach this rim and take it home with you. Jag calls it ‘the first voice-activated artificial intelligence (AI) steering wheel that will be able to carry out hundreds of tasks.’

So it’s more of a tablet than a physical wheel – although it will still drive the car, when it’s not in autonomous mode.

When on your desktop at home or in your handbag, you’ll be able to hail a ride or reserve the Jaguar of your choosing from the on-demand membership club that most manufacturers are now developing. And it’ll store all your preferences, from preferred radio stations and seat positions to your preference for where you want to drive yourself.

Sayer is named after Jag’s famous designer Malcolm Sayer, who styled the company’s cars from 1951-70. See the connected wheel at Tech Fest at London’s Central Saint Martin’s art and design college, an exhibition running from 7-10 September 2017.
