Sacré rouge! Citroen redesigns the chevron badge

One of the most famous badges in the car world is coming in for a refresh: you’re looking at the new-for-2023 Citroen logo.

It’s only the tenth double-chevron badge in 103 years, launched to coincide with a major brand refresh across the board and to make the logo easier to use on digital touchpoints.

It’s a trend that’s swept the industry. Remember the 2D badge that Volkswagen rolled out a couple of years ago? The new two-dimensional lion Peugeot badge? Chromed, three-dimensional logos are out, simpler, flat symbols are in.

New Citroen logo: a quick history

The new badge is designed to hark back to the 1919 original logo (see below). Founder André Citroen picked the double-chevron identity to reflect his metalwork company’s expertise at producing chevron-shaped ’herringbone’ gear systems. It’s branding that’s stuck ever since.

We’ll see the new logo for the first time, Citroen promises, on a ‘significant conceptual Citroen family vehicle’ later this month, believed to be part-revealed in the top photograph. This car showcases the new slogan ‘Nothing moves us like Citroen.’

CAR will be reporting on this launch later this week. The new vertical oval badge will then cascade down to production vehicles ‘from mid-2023-on.’ Sounds perfectly timed for the new Citroen C3 due in the middle of next year.

Citroen boss speaks

Citroen CEO Vincent Cobée said: ‘As we embark on probably the most exciting chapter in our illustrious 103-year history, the time is right for Citroen to adopt a modern and contemporary new look.

‘Our new identity is an elegant symbol of progress as we move our customers physically in daring, forward-looking vehicles that challenge traditional industry rules, and emotionally by ensuring their entire experience – particularly going electric – is more affordable, comfortable and enjoyable whatever their wants and needs.’
