Renault’s R5 Turbo 3E is an extreme electric drift car

  • Cyberpunk Turbo 3E is designed for the gymkhana
  • 375bhp e-motor, enormous wing
  • Will have a set of NFTs based off it, too

Renault’s having some fun. Before we see the production-spec arrival of the Renault 5 EV, the brand’s design team has been let off the leash, creating this wild electric concept car: the R5 Turbo 3E making its debut at the 2022 Paris motor show.

The bewinged caricature of a Renault 5 is an all-electric concept designed for drifting on track, as Renault strives to prove that EVs can be fun.

The R5 Turbo 3E has a 42kWh battery pack and a single e-motor that deploys 375bhp and 516lb ft to the rear wheels. The 3E can sprint to 62mph in as little as 3.5 seconds, and it can top 124mph. As well as some punch performance stats, Renault says the 3E has a 50-plus-degree steering angle for mega drifts. There are even several mounting points to attach cameras to show off the car’s abilities. Couple this with the battery pack and Renault says it’s ready to slay a gymkhana.

And, despite looking like a project car from someone who lives in a cyberpunk universe, it’s still familiarly a Renault 5 – even if you have to look at it from very far away. The brief even required Renault’s designers to exaggerate the lines of the R5 and be ‘inspired by the videogame universe.’ Big vents in the bumper maintain airflow and act as downforce generators, while the pink, yellow and blue lighting is very Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

There are even drive modes designed like modes in video games. To start it, you need to push the ‘Free Play’ button, while there are Turbo, Track Invader and Donut modes for drifting, track driving and 360º spins respectively.

And, frankly, it wouldn’t be 2022 without an NFT-flavoured twist. As well as the real thing making its public debut at the Chantilly Arts & Elegance contest in September 2022, as well as the 2022 Paris Motor Show in October, Renault will generate a collection of non-fungible tokens based around the car.
