Porsche Cayman Edition 1 (2007): first official pictures

So, black is the new black at Porsche.

So it seems. This is the new Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1, a special run of 777 all-black Cayman models – based on the 3.4-litre 295bhp Cayman S. It’s the work of the Porsche Design Studio – but we’re not sure about those body stripes. It arrives here in November, priced at £49,890, a mighty £5810 over the standard Cayman S.

So apart from a lot of black paint, what else do I get?

You get a choice of black paint for a start – you can have glossy or matte black paint work. Porsche has lowered the ride height of the Edition 1 by 10mm and the Cayman is fitted with 5mm axle spacers to push the 911 turbo style 19inch alloys – shod with 235/35 ZR profile tyres at the front and wider 265/35 ZR profile boots out back – flush with the wheelarches.

Anything else?

PASM Porsche’s active suspension is standard, the price also includes a Porsche Driving Experience course, and in the boot you’ll find a bespoke briefcase filled with trinkets including a Porsche Flat Six Chronograph, a pocket knife, a pair of sunglasses, pen and a key ring – all in black, of course.

The cabin looks pretty sinister

Yes, the monochrome look extends to the leather and Alcantara swathed cabin, and the instruments, centre console, fascia console, and door trims all get the black treatment. The grippy three-spoke sports steering wheel, the gear lever, the handbrake grip, and the roof lining are clothed in non-slip black Alcantara and should you forget what kind of car you’re driving, Porsche have conveniently embossed the company logo on the seat headrests. The production number of each car will be stamped on a badge mounted on the lid of the glove box.
