This is about as much Maserati news as we’ll get for the 2019 Geneva motor show – a new Levante SUV model. The Trofeo Launch Edition makes its way to the Swiss show, after its first announcement at the LA motor show in 2018.

The Levante Trofeo uses a full-fat V8 from Ferrari, capable of a 0-62mph sprint in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 186mph. Maserati promises a properly sporty drive thanks to 50:50 weight distribution and a low centre of gravity – just like the rest of the Levante range. Wider wheels, measuring 22-inches – a first for the Levante – are meant to help grip.
A new drive mode – Corsa – joins the settings available to the Levante. Corsa improves throttle response further, opens up the exhaust more and slackens off the traction control systems.
Inside, the Trofeo uses a specific leather called Pieno Fiore as its upholstery and matte carbonfibre inserts. A 17-speaker Bowers and Wilkins audio system is standard, too.
The news comes after the Levante went petrol only in Europe. The SUV first started off as a diesel-only offering in the UK, but changing attitudes to the black pump forced Maserati’s hand. Back in April 2017, Maserati’s North Europe region manager Peter Denton, said: ‘Following the launch of the diesel-powered Levante in the UK, it became clear there is also a demand for the luxury SUV in a petrol-powered version. With the Levante now available in the UK with our V6 petrol engine, we can offer the performance synonymous with Maserati.’
At the show, Maserati also announced a new personalisation programme and some interior design concepts, including one that uses Pelletessuta – a woven leather pattern.
