The first car to emerge under Infiniti’s new naming structure will be the Q50, due at the Detroit motor show in January 2013.
The Q50 will replace the rare-groove G37 saloon, and attempt to propel Nissan’s luxury arm into the hotly contested small exec saloon battleground.
Infiniti Q50: the first details
While the Q50 will fight established posh saloons like the BMW 3-series and Mercedes C-class, it’ll also spawn a Q60 two-door coupe and cabriolet range, like its German rivals.
After the outgoing G37 suffered for its one-size engine range (a thirsty 3.7-litre petrol V6 shared with the Nissan 370Z sports car), Infiniti will join the market trend for downsizing with its new Q-badged cars. Expect 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines to form the backbone of the Q50 range, and a hybrid model to rival the new Lexus IS, also due in Detroit in January 2013.
What else is new at Infiniti?
It’s a busy period for Infiniti ahead: along with an entire model range overhaul, the company has also announced it’ll build its 1-series rival hatchback in Sunderland from 2015.
