Genesis GV70 Electrified: new electric version of premium SUV announced

Updated: 22 November 2021

► Electric Genesis GV70 confirmed
► Expected to arrive in Europe in 2022
► Claims ‘more than’ 311 miles on a charge

Genesis has officially confirmed a pure-electric version of its GV70 crossover, named GV70 Electrified. It’s been revealed at the 2021 Guangzhou motor show for the Chinese market.

There’s loads of clever tech from the Hyundai Motor Group under the skin, and the electric crossover is expected to make its debut in other markets in the next year or so – after all, Genesis says it’s been planning electric models beyond the BEV-only GV60 and G80 Electrified; makes sense that the GV70 Electrified is that next model.

Remind me of the GV70 again…

It’s basically a BMW X3, Audi Q5, Volvo XC60 and Porsche Macan rival for those of us in Europe. We liked it very much when we tested it and think it’s arguably the best car Genesis makes within its European line-up; it drives well, feels properly well-made inside and gives the Germans a run for their money in terms of technology refinement offered out of the box.

Even so, the engine range is a weak point; the diesel option is quite gruff and not exactly class-leading for efficiency, and the turbocharged petrol engine is quick but very thirsty. Genesis is skipping the plug-in hybrid craze here and jumping straight to full electric.

Give me some GV70 Electrified tech specs

While not made explicit, we understand that the Genesis uses the E-GMP platform under the skin. Genesis says that the GV70 Electrified is all-wheel drive, meaning a motor on each axle, with 483bhp and 516lb ft on tap. The electric SUV claims ‘more than’ 311 miles on a single charge, with a 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds being possible via a Boost mode.

We believe it’s E-GMP because of the additional technology offered, here. The GV70 has a 800v electric architecture, much like the Genesis GV60 as well as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. On top of that, the GV70 also features the platform’s V2L technology, allowing you to power devices and even other EVs using an adaptor and the car’s battery pack.

Any other cool bits?

Plenty, but most aren’t specific to the GV70 Electrified. Genesis says the electric crossover has road-scanning adaptive suspension and active noise suppression. That’s on top of the GV70’s already slick, tech-filled and well-built interior.

Bits specific to the Electrified model include the ability to deactivate the front e-motor for better efficiency, as well as i-Pedal – basically one-pedal driving functionality.

So when can I get one?

Well, Genesis revealed the car in China, alluding to the idea that it’ll go on sale there first. But expect the GV70 Electrified to come to Europe within the next 12 months, meaning we’ll see it here by the end of 2022.
