► Inspired by classic 2CV-based beach buggy
► Powered by a 30kWh electric motor; 125-mile range
► Production car goes on sale in France this year
1) What new madness is this? Proof that Citroën is serious about re-exploring its zaniest heyday. We’d just finished chuckling at the crazy Cactus M concept revealed at Frankfurt 2015 when the news broke: they’re building it, and it’s on sale in France this year.
2) Why Mehari? It’s inspired by the original 2CV-based beach buggy of the same name launched in 1968, but has a modern twist: it’s powered by a 30kWh electric motor via lithium-polymer batteries. Quoted range is 125 miles and top speed is 70mph.
3) Is it practical? There are four seats in a car with small supermini dimensions, and the rear bench can be folded for extra luggage space. The body is made from thermoformed plastic, claimed to be dent-proof, and the interior can be hosed down.
4) It has a roof, right? It’s a trick folding soft-top which can be fashioned to cover the front, rear, sides or even the whole car if you’re planning to overnight at the beach. Check the juice levels though – it takes 13 hours to recharge the batteries.
