BMW has pumped up the straight six in its fastest regular production 1-series and 2-series to create the new M140i and 240i M Performance duo.

The 2017 mode year cars are on sale now, boosted by the latest 3.0-litre six-cylinder TwinPower Turbo tech.

Replacing the 135i and 235i models, they get an extra 14bhp and 37lb ft of torque, ensuring electric performance.

What’ll she do, mister?

The new pairing is notably faster. The full specs look like this:

  • BMW M140i Hatchback £31,875, 335bhp/369lb ft, 4.8sec 0-62mph, 155mph, 36.2mpg, 179g/km CO2
  • BMW M240i Coupe £35,090, 335bhp/369lb ft, 4.8sec 0-62mph, 155mph, 36.2mpg, 179g/km CO2
  • BMW M240i Convertible (below) £38,535, 335bhp/369lb ft, 4.9sec 0-62mph, 155mph, 34mpg, 189g/km CO2

That means gains of 0.3sec on the 0-62mph sprint – bringing it down to serious sports car territory. Yet – rejoice! – fuel consumption falls by around 7%.

All models are available with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. The stick shift has a rev-blip function for downchanges, for those heel-n-toe matched perfect gearchanges.
