► M40i coming to New York
BMW’s X4 range will grow at the 2018 New York motor show, with the inclusion of a M40i petrol option.
The M40i uses a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol cranking out 335bhp, good for a 0-62mph launch in just 4.3 seconds.
You can order an X4 now, priced from £42,900 for a X4 20d.
BMW has sold an X4 since 2014 and racked up 200,000 sales worldwide. The headlines of the new one include an all-new look, fresh engines and not one but two M Performance models.
Tell me about that design
Well, put short: it’s an X3 with a sleeker rear end. The front is recognisably similar to the X3, with chunky bumpers and huge kidney grilles. All models have adaptive LED headlights as standard.
The rear end is similar in design to the X2, with slim rear lights and chunky exhausts but, thankfully, BMW has neglected to add a set of brand badges to the C pillars.
The X4 is 81mm longer, has a 54mm stretched wheelbase, 37mm wider and 3mm lower than its predecessor.
And what about inside?
It’s not much of a shock in here – standard BMW fare. Driver-centric dashboard, solid materials, iDrive-controlled infotainment system with digital instruments and cockpit details lifted out of the 5-series.
Vernasca leather upholstery is standard in the UK and the red detailing you see pictured is bespoke to the X4. Trim levels start at Sport and rise to M Sport and M Sport X.
Engines and specs
Three diesels and one petrol make up the range. There’s a 20d four-cylinder diesel and an all-new M Performance-derived M40d, with a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel making up the range initially. The brand’s xDrive all-wheel drive system features.
The M40i version joins the range at the 2018 New York motor show, and a 30d diesel will arrive later in 2018.
