Alpina has gotten its tools out again, tweaking the latest BMW SUVs to create the XD3 and XD4.

The new SUV siblings from the exclusive carmaker are based on the X3 and X4 and have debuted at the 2018 Geneva motor show.

Headlines are the use of a punchy 3.0-litre quad-turbo diesel engine, a classic Alpina bodykit and multi-spoke alloy wheels.

Wait a second – did you say quad turbos?

We did indeed. The powerplant used in both models is a straight-six diesel using four turbochargers, producing 383bhp and a heady 568lb ft or torque, sent through an eight-speed ZF auto to all four wheels.

Alpina XD4 rear

Performance figures include a 0-62mph launch in 4.6 seconds – something Alpina claims makes the models the fastest SUVs in their class – and a top speed of 167mph.

If you’re bothered, Alpina also says that the unit is capable of 31.4mpg on the WLTP economy test.

Tell me about the looks and interior

Well, since it’s an Alpina you get massive Classic Forged 22-inch alloys, a subtle bodykit that features four tailpipes and dinky spoiler. At the rear end, the XD4 also has a rear splitter, while the XD3’s is smoothed out.

Alpina XD3 interior

Inside, the X3 and X4’s interior has been enhanced by a hand-crafted steering wheel, a plaque located at the bottom of the dashboard in front of the gearlever, and a bespoke Alpina instrument display.

How much?

We don’t know yet – Alpina has neglected to tell us the price and it hasn’t surfaced online yet. However, the old XD3 Biturbo retailed for around £56,000, so we’re convinced the starting price for a new XD3 will nudge the £60,000 mark.
