Martin Brundle: should he stay or should he go?

Published: 28 October 2008 Updated: 26 January 2015

I read recently on F1-live.com that F1’s governing body the FIA is not happy with Martin Brundle’s commentary at grand prix. Word has it, the suits are trying to stymie Brundle’s move from ITV to the BBC next season.

They say Brundle’s commentary is not up to scratch. What cobblers! Exactly which planet do these anonymous lawmakers live on? Brundle’s commentary is one of the few high points in ITV’s coverage – the man makes races far more informative and technical without sinking into the Peter Storm world of The Anorak.

Unsurprisingly, dour UK tabloid The Daily Mail even reports that ‘FIA delegate Alan Donnelly, who represents Max Mosley at Grand Prix, has been trying to dissuade BBC executives from employing Brundle’. Typical doom and gloom.

This is outrageous. Martin Brundle is way superior to James Allen as an F1 commentator – Beeb executives should be couriering Brundle a contract by first-class post.

F1 wouldn’t be the same without him. Let’s hope the BBC see the error of their ways and employ the best commentator out there for the new 2009 F1 season.
