► First pics of new 2016 VW Amarok
► Gets a grunty new 3.0 V6 TDI
► Greater towing capacity: up to 3.5t
This is the new, gruntier Volkswagen Amarok – scrubbed-up and refreshed for the 2016 model year.
Although the cosmetic changes are low-key, the main news is the addition of a new 3.0-litre V6 engine, the first non-four-cylinder motor offered in VW’s first pick-up.
At a stroke, it becomes the torquiest ute on sale in the UK, with an improved towing capacity (up to 3.5 tonnes) which should appeal to the upmarket user-chooser pick-up buyers the Amarok’s aimed at.
A choice of V6 diesel outputs
The new EU6-compliant V6 turbodiesel comes in only one capacity, but three power outputs:
- 3.0-litre V6 161bhp
- 3.0-litre V6 201bhp
- 3.0-litre V6 221bhp
The new V6 Amarok has a fulsome 406lb ft of torque. Just as well, then, that 4Motion all-wheel drive is standard on all models sold here. An eight-speed automatic transmission is offered too.
Specs, new equipment too
As well as the new engine, Wolfsburg has added a raft of extra equipment for 2016: 14-way adjustable seats, upgraded Climatronic ventilation system and paddle-shift gearchanges are now added to the steering wheel.
Twenty-inch wheels are offered and the infotainment system is upgraded too. Safety kit now spans post-collision braking, stability control, parking sensors and cameras.
